一、课程的性质和任务
1. 课程性质:
该课程是英语语言文学专业学生必修课程,在英语专业二年级第二学期开设。每周2 学时,共计36学时。
2. 课程任务:
该课程主要介绍英国和美国的社会文化背景知识,如地理概况、政体、经济、历史、文学、风俗习惯、教育体制、社会生活、外事、媒体、文化生活、体育艺术等等。旨在帮助学生了解英国和美国的社会文化概貌, 提高学生对文化差异的敏感性、宽容性和处理文化差异的灵活性,达到提高英语水平,增强跨文化交际能力的目的。同时,该课程还旨在提高学生的学习兴趣,扩大知识面,为其他专业课程的学习提供帮助。

四、课程教学的基本要求
1. 课堂讲授:
由于英美文化内容丰富,涵盖面广,要在有限的学时里引导学生了解大量的知识,难度很大,所以本课程的教学方法以课堂教学和课外自主学习为主。教师课堂授课以课本为纲要,同时补充大量课本以外的社会文化知识,以及搜索信息的方法手段,组织学生参加课堂讨论,鼓励课外自主学习。
除了传统的以文字、图片、直观教具为辅助手段的课堂教学,还采用音像、影视、网络、现代传媒等多媒体手段,帮助学生从各个侧面了解英美文化。另外,不定期举办专题报告和专题讨论。
有意识地引导学生利用图书馆、网络等信息资源自主学习。以课外阅读、课堂讨论、专题报告、学期论文等方式鼓励学生对自己感兴趣地方面进行深入学习,培养学生一定的自学能力和研究能力。
2.
实践环节:要求学生写2篇500字左右的英文学期论文。
3. 习题课、课外作业、答疑:
a. 本课程没有专门安排习题课。
b. 课外作业主要以课后练习为主。除了名词解释、填空、选择以外,要求学生每次选择一问答题认真解答。每次上课抽出10-15分钟讨论课后思考题。学期中间分四次抽查学生作业。每周要求学生课前预习,课后总结归纳。
c. 由于课上时间有限,加拿大,澳大利亚和新西兰章节要求学生课外自学。
d. 答疑方式:
1) 课堂教师答疑:利用课堂或课间答疑。
2) 集体讨论答疑:如果某位同学提出有价值的问题,可由全体同学讨论,或留作课后讨论题。
3) 网上答疑:利用校园网和email方式答疑。

1、学生课堂参与的表现占总成绩的5%,平时作业占总成绩的10%
2、英文学期论文成绩占总成绩的15%

1)考试原则和目的:该课程主要介绍英国和美国的社会文化背景知识,如地理概况、政体、经济、历史、文学、风俗习惯、教育体制、社会生活、外事、媒体、文化生活、体育艺术等等。旨在帮助学生了解英语国家的社会文化概貌, 提高学生对文化差异的敏感性、宽容性和处理文化差异的灵活性,达到提高英语水平,增强跨文化交际能力的目的。鉴于此,该课程的考试范围和内容主要侧重英美两国重要的文化现象和和文化知识;试题应该能够反映学生对于所学知识的归纳、演绎,推理和分析能力。
2)考试范围:英国和美国的社会文化背景知识
3)考试内容:考试内容覆盖课程所涉及到的英语国家社会文化各方面的背景知识,如地理、历史,民族,政体、经济、文学、风俗习惯、教育体制、社会生活、外事、媒体、文化生活、体育艺术等等。
4)考试题型:题型多样化,便于从多角度全面、客观地测试学生的真实水平。试题以客观题型为主(80%):包括选择(35%)、填空(25%)、判断正误(20%)——主要考察学生对英语国家社会文化背景知识的掌握;主观题型为辅(20%):问答题——主要考察学生对于所学知识的综合、归纳、演绎、分析、推理能力。
